The Director Asghar Farhadi Was Found Guilty of Plagiarizing the Idea for the Film a Hero

Asghar Farhadi Plagiarism

Asghar Farhadi found himself in an extremely unpleasant situation. He was sued by a former student for the fact that an Iranian director borrowed a story from her documentary film without indicating the name of the real author in the credits of the film A Hero.

Azadeh Masihzadeh filed a case after a man had previously sued her for defamation. In both cases, the courts ruled in favor of Masihzadeh.

This ugly story started back in 2014. Masihzade filmed a short documentary film for a seminar led by Farhadi. All Winners, All Losers was shown at a film festival in 2018.

Farhadi's film A Hero was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021 and won the Grand Prix. The film earned 2.5 million dollars worldwide.

Masihzadeh said that Farhadi forced her to sign a document transferring the rights to the story to him without payment. Farhadi claimed through his lawyer that the basic idea for his film originated much earlier. However, the court considered that it did not have enough evidence of Masihzade's intention to damage the reputation of the great director.

And as a result, he was found guilty after all. The decision is final and cannot be appealed. The theft of a film's concept could result in the transfer of rental income and even prison.
