The 20th Century company has released a trailer for the West Side Story musical directed by famed director Steven Spielberg. This picture is an adaptation of the Broadway production of the same name in 1957, according to which a musical film was already released in 1961.

This story takes the plot of Romeo and Juliet to New York in the 50s of the twentieth century. The plot revolves around the love story of Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zegler), who belong to two conflicting gangs. The audience is waiting for another story of youth love, flourishing against the background of hatred. And, of course, songs, dances and beautiful costumes.

The filmmakers did not change the music, nor did the plot, which remained close to the original musical. The premiere of the film in America is scheduled for December 10, 2021.

Lyrics writer for the Broadway musical West Side Story Stephen Sondheim has already shared his impressions of the new adaptation of the production by Steven Spielberg. According to him, the film is very good. He said Spielberg was able to refresh the story and make it more relevant. The author urged viewers to watch it in the cinema to have a good time and also hinted that the new adaptation is very different from the original, and promised unexpected surprises.

As Sondheim emphasized, film musicals are really very difficult to shoot. However, in his opinion, Spielberg did an excellent job of adapting West Side Story.

But Stephen Sondheim was not thrilled with the 1961 adaptation of the musical, although she won 10 Academy Awards. And since he praised Steven Spielberg's West Side Story, the film must be very good indeed.
